    Frequently asked questions

How accurate is this trip budget calculator?

It's built for planning, not for a quote, so every figure is an estimate. We are collecting feedback from real trips (what people estimated versus what they actually spent) to check how close the estimates come. For known corridors the distance comes from CostMyTrip's distance table; otherwise it is the straight-line distance stretched for road curvature. Fuel prices default to indicative state averages with a reference date, and hotel, food, fare and toll figures are fixed planning assumptions. Real prices vary by city, date and operator, so replace any default with what you know. How we calculate lists every assumption.

Does CostMyTrip book tickets, hotels or cabs?

No — this is a planning and budgeting tool only. It doesn't book anything or connect to any live booking system. Once you're happy with a plan, you'll still book your train, flight, cab or hotel separately.

Is my trip data saved anywhere?

Your route, dates, travellers, saved trips, expenses and preferences are kept in your own browser on this device, so your plan is still there next time. CostMyTrip has no server-side database and its own code does not upload them. If you share a Trip, Itinerary or Expense Card, its link carries that data inside the link (after the #) — encoded, not encrypted — so anyone with the link can read it. See “What each card and link includes” under Trip cards & sharing and our Privacy Policy. Clearing your browser data clears saved trips.

Can I change the fuel price, tolls or fares to match today's rates?

Yes — fuel price, mileage, the toll allowance per km, cab rates and fares are all editable. Tap "check today's fuel price" or "today's toll rates" next to those fields to look them up, then type in what you find. Your figure is then labelled as your input.

How does the calculator handle travelling with children?

These are planning heuristics, not operator policies. Children aged 5–12 are counted at half the adult amount for food, train and bus fares, at 75% for flights, and at the full amount for activities. For children under 5, this calculator assigns ₹0 to food, train and bus costs and 10% of the adult flight estimate. These are budgeting assumptions, not a promise of free travel or meals; operators may charge for a reserved seat, berth, meal or other service. Rooms are the larger of one room per two adults and one room per three adults-plus-children (minimum one), so the default room calculation does not add a room for an infant; a hotel’s occupancy or extra-bed policy may require a different room count. The per-person figure divides the total by adults plus children; infants are not in the divisor. Check fares and room rules with the operator or hotel. Under Fine-tune, use the complete quoted transport or stay total and adjust the room count; include any infant food cost in your chosen food allowance.

What if my destination isn't in the list?

Search covers hundreds of cities and towns across India, and goes down to mandals, villages and places of interest in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. If a place is missing, choose "Not listed? Add it as your own place" in the search results and pick the nearest listed town. CostMyTrip estimates distances from that town, and the Google Maps link still uses your exact place name.

How are the distances and travel times worked out?

For about 150 known place pairs CostMyTrip uses a fixed distance from its own table; for any other pair of places it takes the straight-line distance and multiplies it by 1.25 (plains), 1.45 (hills) or 1.65 (mountains) for road curvature. Route pages also show an OpenStreetMap routing snapshot for comparison, but the calculator keeps its own distance. Driving times are planning estimates from an assumed average speed for your vehicle, slower on hill and mountain legs, plus allowances for city entry/exit, traffic and breaks; they are not live routing. For trains and flights CostMyTrip does not estimate journey time; it estimates only the road transfers it can. Use the Open in Google Maps link for live directions and traffic.

How is the day-by-day itinerary made?

It is built from your route, number of days and daily pace. Travel days are sized to your driving limit, and explore days use places from CostMyTrip's own list plus any you saved. It is a set of suggestions, not bookings, and you can add your own plans to any day.

Can I use CostMyTrip in Hindi?

Yes. Tap हिन्दी at the top of the page. Main screens, buttons and budget labels switch to Hindi, while longer place tips and itinerary suggestions stay in English.

    What is Trip mode?

Trip mode is a simpler view for when you are already travelling. It hides the planning steps and shows today's plan, nearby help, emergency numbers and a quick way to log what you spend.

How do I share or save my plan?

Open “Trip cards & sharing” under your budget. Share your Trip Card, Itinerary Card or Expense Card as a PDF on WhatsApp, download or print it, copy a full text summary, or save the trip on this device to compare with other plans later. Anyone with a card’s link can open the same plan.

    Is CostMyTrip free to use?

Yes. There is nothing to buy and no account to create.
