Fuel needed = distance ÷ mileage.
Fuel cost = fuel needed × price per litre (or per kg for CNG, per kWh for an EV).
Cost per person = total cost ÷ number of people sharing.
| Example (one way) | Distance | Mileage | Price | Fuel cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Petrol car | 300 km | 15 km/litre | ₹105/litre | ₹2,100 |
| Diesel SUV | 300 km | 13 km/litre | ₹96/litre | ₹2,215 |
| CNG car | 300 km | 20 km/kg | ₹75/kg | ₹1,125 |
| Petrol bike | 300 km | 45 km/litre | ₹105/litre | ₹700 |
Example prices are round planning figures, not current rates.
Worked petrol example: 300 ÷ 15 = 20 litres. At ₹105 per litre, that is ₹2,100 in fuel, or ₹7 per km. Add ₹300 in total tolls and the journey costs ₹2,400: ₹1,200 each for two travellers.
A return journey doubles the entered one-way distance. Enter tolls for the whole selected journey; the calculator does not double the toll field. Fuel-only cost per km excludes tolls. Parking, accommodation and food are not included.

Tips to spend less on fuel
- Drive smoothly and stay within posted speed limits; avoid unnecessary acceleration and braking.
- Check tyre pressure before a long drive.
- Carry only what you need; extra weight costs fuel, especially in the hills.
- Compare the shared car cost with current bus or train fares before choosing how to travel.
Common questions
How do I calculate fuel cost for a trip?
Fuel needed = distance ÷ mileage. Fuel cost = fuel needed × fuel price. For example, 300 km in a car that gives 15 km/litre needs 20 litres; at ₹105/litre that is ₹2,100. Double it for a return trip.
How do I calculate my car or bike mileage (average)?
Fill the tank fully, reset the trip meter, drive normally, then fill the tank fully again. Mileage = kilometres driven ÷ litres filled the second time. Use the mileage calculator on this page.
What mileage should I use for a car?
Use measured mileage from your own vehicle where possible. The preset is only a starting assumption. Traffic, terrain, load, driving style and AC use can change fuel consumption.
Does this include tolls?
You can add tolls separately in the optional toll field. For a full trip budget with tolls, stay and food, use the CostMyTrip trip planner.
Are the fuel prices live?
No. This is a fuel expense calculator, not a live fuel-price lookup. State petrol presets are indicative; diesel presets are approximated from petrol, while CNG and electricity use default assumptions. Enter your current local price per litre, kg or kWh.
