How to split trip costs with friends without fights

Money is the usual cause of friction on a group trip, and it is nearly always avoidable. The trick is to agree the rules before the trip starts and to keep a single record.

Separate shared costs from personal ones

Shared costs are the ones everyone benefits from equally: fuel, toll, parking and the rented vehicle. Personal costs are the ones that differ, such as souvenirs, extra drinks or an individual ticket. Put shared costs in a common pool and let each person pay their own personal costs.

Decide how to split

Splitting equally is the simplest, and works when everyone travels the same distance and shares the same rooms. If people join or leave midway, split by days or by the number of people sharing each cost. Children and infants often count as a fraction, so agree that early.

Let one person pay, then settle

It is easiest when one person pays a bill and the group settles later, instead of everyone paying a little each time. Keep a running note of who paid for what, with the amount and the date.

Settle at the end, in the fewest payments

If four friends have paid different amounts, you do not need everyone to pay everyone. Work out each person's net balance, then have the people who owe pay the people who are owed. That usually needs only a few UPI transfers.
